Ali brings 20 years of experience in global asset management, private equity and cross-border deal structuring. He actively advises boards of leading institutions and governments on economic policy, intellectual property initiatives, financial markets and sustainable development, among others.
Ali is the Co-Founder and Managing Partner of Singapore-based Makara Capital.
Ali serves on the Board of Directors of the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS), which is the lead Government agency focused on innovation and tasked with building a vibrant and robust IP-enabled ecosystem for Singapore’s future growth.
Ali serves as a member of the Government of Singapore Sub-Committee on the Future Economy (CFE) focused on Future Corporate Capabilities and Innovation chaired by Finance Minister Heng Swee Keat.
Ali is Global Advisor to Alaska-based PT Capital, a private equity fund set up to build partnerships to responsibly develop and invest in the Arctic.
Ali has served as Adviser to The Carlyle Group, the leading global alternative asset manager with a focus on business development initiatives relating to Asia expansion.
Ali previously served as Vice President of Morgan Stanley in Singapore, where he helped build the company’s Asian and Middle East asset management business.
Prior to this, Ali worked with the World Bank in Washington DC as a Senior Consultant in the private sector finance group, advising the governments of developing economies on financial sector reforms including efficient capital market structures and public-private partnerships.
Earlier, Ali managed a technology and innovation team at Goldman Sachs & Co, in which he was responsible for strategically leveraging technology to enhance trading. Based out of New York, Ali also served as an integral part of a portfolio group that managed $3.5bn, with a predominant focus on emerging technologies.
Ali holds a Master in Public Administration from Harvard University (Kennedy School of Government), a Bachelor of Arts in Government and Physics from Bowdoin College and a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Columbia University.
